Valentine Xavier (Marlon Brando) runs away from New Orleans in order to avoid arrest. He reaches a small town and starts working under Lady Torrence ((Anna Magnani) whose bad tempered husband Jabe Torrence (Victor Jory) is on his deathbed. Two women in the town, Carol Cutrere (Joanne Woodward) and Vee Talbott (Maureen Stapleton) are interested in him. However, Xavier falls for Lady Torrence and is threatened by Sheriff Talbott (R.G. Armstrong), a friend of Jabe, of serious consequences unless he leaves. Xavier soon finds out that Lady Torrence is pregnant and therefore, refuses to leave the town. This sparks Jabe’s jealousy. |
