In New York City, in 1870, the wealthy members of society conducted themselves by strict, unwritten rules. Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his fiance May Welland (Winona Ryder) live by these rules of conduct and it makes for a very pleasant life. Then, Ellen, the Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer) comes to New York after having left her husband. She reveals to Newland that her husband was abusive. But, because she is living on her own without her husband, she is regarded with suspicion by polite society. And for good reason. It is not long before Newland endangers his good match to May by falling in love with Ellen. |
