The movie has several storylines which are related to three families. The first family includes Phil (Timothy Spall) who is taxi driver. Penny (Lesley Manville) is his wife and she works as a cashier in a store. Rachel (Alison Garland) is their daughter, she works in a nursing home and Rory (James Cordon) is their son. The problems in the family arise when Rory runs out of breath and was hospitalized after suffering from a heart attack. The second family is family of Phil's friend, Ron (Paul Jesson), who is a taxi driver and works with Phil. Ron has a unemployed teenage daughter , Samantha (Sally Hawkins)and an alcoholic wife Carol (Marion Bailey). Carol is also unemployed and stays at home. The third family is comprised of Maureen (Ruth Sheen), who is another cashier in the same store. She works with Penny. She has a beautiful daughter Donna (Helen Coker). Jason (Daniel Mays) is Danna's boyfriend. The dispute in the family arise when Donna finds herself pregnant.
