Dino (Dean Martin) is a pop vocalist known to be a heavy drinker and lecherous behavior decides to en route to Hollywood in his Italian sports car. While on his way, he makes a stop to a gas station where he meets with Barney Millsap (Cliff Osmond), a would be lyricist who writes pop songs together with Orville J. Spooner (Ray Walston) who is a local piano teacher who happens to have a wife named Zelda (Felicia Farr) who is the most beautiful woman in the town. When Barney realizes who Dino is, the two men decide to sabotage his car in the hope that Dino will be interested to sing one of their songs. Orville then invites Dino to stay at his house but is forced to drive his wife out of the house in order to save his marriage and instead asks Polly the Pistol (Kim Novak), a prostitute pretending to be his wife. A twist of events soon follows when Orville is perplexed as how Dino is singing their song on national television.
