A married couple, Jack (Sydney Pollack) and Sally (Judy Davis), that seems happy to all of those around them, decide to part ways and look for other people. Even their best friends, Gabe (Woody Allen) and Judy (Mia Farrow) are astonished with the news. With the news of their best friends’ split, Gabe and Judy begin reassessing their own marriage. Eventually, Gabe and Judy both become attracted to others. Gabe is attracted to a much younger woman named Rain (Juliette Lewis). While Gabe and Judy’s marriage begins falling apart, the opposite starts happening with their best friends’ marriage. Jack and Sally find their way back to one another.
