"The Graduate" follows Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) immediately following his graduation from college. Benjamin returns home with no defined plans of what to do next with his life. After a graduation party for Benjamin that is mostly attended by his parents friends, the wife of Benjamin's father's business partner, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), asks Benjamin to drive her home and then to come into the house with her. After forcing a drink on Benjamin she bluntly offers to have an affair with him. Shocked and flustered Benjamin leaves but within a few days he calls Mrs. Robinson and their affair begins. Benjamin spends his days sleeping by his parent's backyard pool and his nights with Mrs. Robinson. As the summer passes, Benjamin's parents become alarmed at his aimlessness and pressure him to choose a graduate school. Also, unaware of Benjamin's affair, they encourage him to date the Robinson's daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross). Benjamin resists but ultimately takes her on a date. Despite his attempt at making the date a disaster Benjamin falls for Elaine. Angered, Mrs. Robinson reveals the affair and Benjamin’s world collapses. He must move on with his life, which he does by trying to win back Elaine.
