Vera Drake (Imelda Staunton), the typical “little old lady next door,” is a selfless woman living in London England during the 1950’s. During this time period abortions were considered illegal and extreme legal actions would be taken against anyone caught performing such acts. Vera comes from a modest household and is extremely loved by all who know her. Besides tending to her sick mother and the neighbors in need, she also lives a secret life. She provides back room abortions for anyone in need. Everything runs smoothly until one abortion goes a rye and the young woman ends up in the hospital with an extreme infection. Vera is fingered as the abortionist and faces the penalty associated with such act. Through the whole proceedings she holds her head high and refuses to admit any wrongdoing. Then it’s up to the courts to decide her fate.
