Andrei Rublev is a biographical movie which tells the story of the famous Russian painter Andrei Rublev (Anatoli Solonitsyn). Andrei’s life in the fifteenth century is marked by hardships due to the challenge faced by the rival Russian Princes from the invasions by the crude Tartars. In spite of the chaotic atmosphere, Andrei emerged as the first great Russian painter. Andrei has to cope with the violent attacks made on him by the unsophisticated and barbaric Tartars who are determined to thwart Andrei. Due to the social instability and his disordered life, Andrei becomes cynical and loses faith in society. However, he still remains a visionary artist who wants to contribute to art in spite of the intervening circumstances. Andrei’s commitment to art and his faith in the same is reinstated by the simple people he meets like the Jester (Rolan Bykov), idiot girl (Irma Raush) and other common folk.
