“Breathless” takes place in Paris, where Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is hiding out from the law for killing a police officer. He is a minor thug who idolizes Humphrey Bogart, and tries to fashion the same look for himself. He meets Patricia (Jean Seberg), a young American woman, who sells newspapers on the Paris streets. Their relationship develops while he takes refuge in her apartment. She doesn’t know he is on the run until the police question her. In the end, she betrays him, but eventually tells him what she did. Michel does not attempt to flee right away. He seems to accept that he is bound for prison. The ending is a classic of filmmaking. |
