Based loosely on Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer’s Night and Jean Renoir’s Rules of the Game, this Woody Allen film tells the story of a weekend romp hosted by married couple Adrian (Mary Steenburgen) and Andrew (Woody Allen) in honour of the marriage of their friends Ariel (Mia Farrow) and Leopold (Jose Ferrer). However, the personal and romantic lives of the coupled guests prove complicating as the dissatisfactions of each is revealed. Stories, memories, and even sexual partners are swapped throughout the course of the weekend, offering a humorous and off-colour look at married life. |
