Leonard Zelig’s story is an alleged lost tale of the 1920s and 1930s when he was a phenomenon in American society, having a dance named after him and endorsing many products. “Zelig” (Woody Allen) uses old footage meshed with newly shot material to show the character with an array of 20th century celebrities. Zelig is a man unable to be himself, morphing into whatever group or crowd with whom he associates. This comes to the attention of a psychiatrist Dr. Fletcher (Mia Farrow) who sees a problem and wants to cure him while making a film documentary of her efforts. Through the use of newsreels and old photography, Zelig’s life unfolds as a celebrity whose fate rises and falls with the whims of the public. His attempts to escape public scrutiny are followed as he is hounded for his affliction. Many experts in psychology and literature appear as themselves to comment on the story and its meaning.
