In Yorkshire, England, stands a lonely mansion called Wurthering Heights. Here an unhappy man named Heathcliff (Laurence Olivier) lives with his servants. His story began 40 years earlier when as an orphaned gypsy child he was brought to the manor by Mr. Earnshaw (Cecil Humphreys) to live. He is immediately befriended by young Cathy (Merle Oberon) but her older brother Hindley (Hugh Williams) hates Heathcliff. Over the years, Heathcliff and Cathy find solace in their special place, Peniston Crag, where they pretend to be the king and queen of the world. However because of their different positions in life, their love never has the opportunity to play out. Hindley takes over the manor and treats Heathcliff poorly. A wealthy neighbor falls in love and Cathy agrees to marry him. Heathcliff runs away, vowing to seek his fortune and come back. Through all of this tragedy, the love the two shared as children never leaves, even upon Cathy’s deathbed when she confesses that Heathcliff has been the only one for her. Now he lives with regrets until he too dies on the lonely moors.
