New York, New York, a 1977 film is both a musical and a romance. It starts towards the end of World War II with a band musician's infatuation with a beautiful singer. Jimmy (Robert DeNiro) is a saxophone player who falls for Francine (Liza Minnelli), a talented singer. Jimmy is very charming and single-minded about pursuing Francine. He is also a bad boy type-the kind of man that a woman knows she should stay away from but finds herself attracted to the guy anyway. Francine enters into a passionate affair with Jimmy but is hesitant about committing herself to him. She is won over by Jimmy's all-out campaign and they get married. Of course, things don't go smoothly. Their careers take different paths and Jimmy philanders despite their having a child together. The ending is both rousing and poignant with Minnelli giving her all to the title song.
