A sprawling epic that revolves around the generational conflicts of a Texas cattle rancher named Bick Benedict (Rock Hudson), and the new oil economy in pre-World War II Texas. Back east to purchase a prized horse, Bick falls for the socialite daughter of the horse owner (Elizabeth Taylor) and marries her. Moving back to Texas, the two start up their lives and begin to raise a family. Set against this story is the conflict between Bick and the newly rich oil tycoon Jett Rink (James Dean), who was formerly Bick's ranch hand. Resisting the temptation to abandon the traditional old ways of ranching for the draw of the quick riches of the oil fields, Bick and Jett spar back and forth through their lives, their fortunes, and their families, showing the conflict between the old wealth and the new.
