After an automobile accident claims the life of his brother, Jack Carter (Michael Caine) returns to his hometown; Newcastle. Jack is a violent gangster who can erupt at a moments notice and possesses a machinelike sense of purpose. After his brother’s funeral he becomes convinced that his death was not an accident. His investigation goes deep into the criminal world of Newcastle and it’s population of equally unstable characters. His persistent questions result in a mob boss ordering him to leave town. This order only confirms his suspicions and makes his search for the man that ordered his brothers death all the more brutal. |
