Dix Handley (Sterling Hayden) is a strongarm man hired as part of a crew by criminal plotter "Doc" Erwin Riedenschneider (Sam Jaffe) to rob a jewelry store, along with the help of safecracker Louis Ciavelli (Anthony Caruso) and restaurant owner Gus Minissi (James Whitmore). The robbery goes off as planned, but things go awry when financial backer Alonzo D. Emmerich (Louis Calhern) tries to pull a double-cross and get the gems for himself. |
